Fireside Chat: Knowing isn’t doing: why data rarely changes the decision
Tuesday 13th October 2026
About
Most organisations don’t lack data. They lack the owner, the number and the first move that turn it into a decision. Dashboards multiply, risk registers grow, sustainability reports get longer, and very little changes on Monday morning.
James sets out a series of provocations from his work turning sustainability and supply chain data into commercial decisions. Philip responds from the seat of someone who has run risk and operations at one of the UK’s leading property advisers and now leads transformation at another.
Together they explore:
- Why the biggest exposures often sit outside the risk register, because no one has put a figure on them
- What happens to accountability when everyone owns the data
- Sustainability as an operational discipline, not a reporting one
- What the day after the strategy looks like when a firm has to act on what it knows
- Why some organisations avoid finding things out, and what it costs them
It’s an honest exchange between the person who makes the case and the person who has to act on it. The room leaves with one test for any data programme: does it produce a figure, an owner and a first action?
