Frontier: AI & Robotics in Lunar & Martian Exploration

Tuesday 21st October 2025

About

This presentation explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are transforming NASA’s vision for human space exploration under the Artemis and Mars missions. AI is essential for addressing challenges like communication delays, harsh environments, and limited resources, enabling autonomy, safety, efficiency, and meeting mission objectives. Robotics extends human reach through scouting, sampling, maintenance, logistics, construction, and power production/in situ resource utilization. Current applications include medical digital assistants, autonomous navigation, real-time scientific analysis, and mission planning systems.

In addition, past NASA’s rovers – from Sojourner to Perseverance with its Ingenuity helicopter – have pioneered robotic exploration. Emerging concepts include versatile, adaptive robots for extreme terrains and environments. The synergy of AI and robotics enables autonomous decision-making, data-driven discovery, and enhanced mission success.

The presentation will also look ahead, and concepts swarm robotics, self-repairing systems, AI-driven resource utilization, and smart habitats – making AI and robotics foundational to sustaining human presence on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Takeaways

  • Understand how AI enables autonomous decision-making in deep space, addressing communication delays, resource constraints, and crew safety
  • Overview NASA’s approach to scouting, sampling, building, and operating in hazardous or inaccessible environments on the Moon and Mars.
  • The interaction of AI and Robotics in aiding navigation, science return, mission efficiency, and enable future “science autonomy” where robots analyze and prioritize data independently.
  • Insight into advances such as swarm robotics, self-repairing systems, AI-driven resource use, and smart habitats will be critical for sustaining long-term human presence beyond Earth.
