The risk nobody’s priced: critical minerals and the limits of data governance

Tuesday 13th October 2026

About

Sustainability data has become a compliance exercise. It should be a risk one. The exposures that matter most rarely appear in the risk register: the critical mineral inside a product line, the sole supplier three tiers down, the carbon or deforestation rule that lands on something nobody mapped. The data usually exists. The decision doesn’t.

James George, founder of Provocative Human and former Royal Navy clearance diver, works with defence primes, manufacturers and global brands on critical minerals resilience and supply chain sustainability. He’ll show why good data governance still leaves the biggest environmental and supply risks unowned and unpriced, and what it takes to get them onto the register with a number and a name against them. You’ll leave with a practical test to run against your own sustainability data the morning after.

Takeaways

  • Why critical minerals are the supply chain risk most organisations can’t see, and where to look
  • How to put a defensible number on an environmental or supply risk nobody currently owns
  • Why regulation such as CBAM, EUDR and new critical minerals rules turns a sustainability data gap into a commercial exposure
  • One question to take into your next governance meeting that changes what gets decided
