Dr. Anelia Kurteva is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science (Data Management for AI) at the University of Birmingham, UK. Her research intersects the Semantic Web, Data Protection, and AI, leveraging knowledge graphs as key technologies for compliant and responsible AI development. Appointed to the European Data Protection Board’s external expert pool in 2023 and awarded an AI Safety Fellowship in 2024 by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), her work on automated compliance verification using knowledge graphs has been recognized by the OECD Policy Division and the German Government for advancing the field of Accountable AI. She co-chairs The Alan Turing Institute’s Interest Group on Knowledge Graphs for the UK. Prior to her current role, she held postdoctoral research positions at King’s College London and TU Delft, The Netherlands, and earned her PhD from the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
