Can risks outweigh benefits? Building foundations for sustainable data leadership
Thursday 23rd April 2026
About
The benefits of using data have been analysed and measured for decades, but data leaders often do not have the time or remit to fully analyse the risks in their data function and to discuss potential impacts. However, with the rise of “AI everywhere” there has never been a better time to address the risks in data and make a measurable impact in mitigating these. In this talk, we will discuss research on a framework for looking at the most common risks, the key themes within these risks, how this relates to the culture and organisation of data teams and ways to think about the current tensions in AI excitement vs data requirements for success. We will discuss the role of the data leader in changing the risk profile of their data over time, and whether risks do, in fact, outweigh benefits at this time.
Takeaways:
- How you can better understand the risks in your data function
- How this can impact the culture of your team
- How the rise in AI is impacting how you should look at risk
- One thing that you can do tomorrow to mitigate risk
