Fireside chat: The role of data standards in transforming public services and society

Thursday 23rd April 2026

About

Data standards rarely make headlines, but they determine whether services can talk to each other, whether information can be trusted, and whether the people who use those services get a consistent and reliable experience. Without them, even the best-designed systems struggle to deliver at scale.

This fireside chat offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Louise Burke, the CEO of the Open Data Institute, one of the leading organisations working on data standards in practice, and from Martin Boyd, Chair of LEASE, who has seen directly how the presence or absence of good data standards shapes the choices available to millions of people in their homes and daily lives. LEASE is the independent body advising residential leaseholders on their rights.

Together, Louise and Martin will explore what it takes to build standards that stick, what difference they make when they do, and where the most significant opportunities lie for using them to improve people’s lives.
